3 top experiences departing from Sorrento in autumn

You know, summer is the best season to travel and discover, especially places on the sea such as Sorrento and the entire Amalfi Coast. But unfortunately, beautiful things very often do not last long and if in May, after so many fears, we felt like we had an endless summer season ahead, suddenly the days got shorter and the air became fresher. Autumn has arrived but fortunately there is still sun and we can still be around departing from Sorrento!

Here is the list of our top 3 experiences!

What to do in Sorrento when you are on holiday in autumn?

1.Visit the excavations of Pompeii in September

In our opinion, the period September October and April May is the best to visit the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. The area is very large and visiting it in the heat can turn into a tiring experience. On the other hand, in autumn and spring walking among the ruins of the Roman city will be pleasant and interesting.

How do you get to the Pompeii ruins from Sorrento?

It is possible to reach the Pompeii excavations by public transport: with the Circumvesuviana which leaves from Sorrento station every hour or with a special train, the Campania Express which makes only two stops before Pompeii, always starting from the Sorrento station. If you prefer to travel more comfortably, you can choose a private transfer or a private tour of Pompeii with driver and guide.

What to see in Pompeii in one day?

We talked about it extensively here, in our recommended one-day itinerary in Pompeii. The day can be structured around six hours during which, even taking a few breaks, you can see the most important points of the Archaeological Park, the ones that make you feel the atmosphere of the past at its best.

Among the new things to see do not miss one of the latest discoveries of the Pompeii archaeologists: the mummified remains of a person near the necropolis of Porta Sarno. According to scholars, the body belonged to a former slave who had achieved a certain notoriety in the city.

2. Climb to the top of Vesuvius

The second top experience is to climb to the top of Vesuvius. Also in this case it is advisable to do it in autumn and spring compared to summer. In fact, despite the height (1232 meters) in summer the sun is very strong and that is why we recommend enjoying the walk when the climate is milder. During the beautiful sunny days with clear skies, it is possible to look at the entire gulf of Naples, including the islands, from the top of Vesuvius.

Vesuvius wine tasting

After a nice walk on Vesuvius, we always recommend stopping for a wine tasting in one of the cellars of the Vesuvian area where at certain times of the year it is also possible to attend and participate in the grape harvest. Nature, culture and good food, what more do you want?

3.Visit Naples in one day

If you are in Sorrento on holiday in autumn, probably the time to dedicate to the sea or to Capri will be less or you will have to deal with the weather conditions that are not always optimal. So our advice is to plan a one day visit to Naples, perhaps taking advantage of a private tour or transfer in order to save time on the trip and have the possibility of a guide.
We also talked about Naples in one of our itineraries here: the city is large and chaotic but it is possible to dedicate yourself to a particular area in order to get a complete taste.

3 itineraries

You can
1. dedicate yourself to the historic center, with its shops and ancient churches.
2. or you can organize a combined visit to the Capodimonte Museum and the Archaeological Museum.
3. or move to Piazza Plebiscito and the sea.

The choice is yours!
