The blue lizard of Capri

Among the beauties of Capri there are certainly the Faraglioni: the three large rocky boulders located off the coast of Marina Piccola and have always been a symbol of Capri, photographed at least once by all those who have visited the island.
But what you may not know is that on the mythical Faraglioni of Capri, above all on the one in the middle, lives a particular animal, the blue lizard, whose scientific name is Podarcis siculus coeruleus.

The peculiarity of this lizard is that despite belonging to the same species as the land lizards is that its color is an intense blue, especially on the neck and belly, almost like that of the sea of Capri.

The reason for its particular color is not clear but this aspect has made the stories about this type of lizard legendary, thus increasing the charm of the island itself.

The blue lizard of Capri is therefore an institution and in recent years groups have been born to support this species, to sensitize the inhabitants and tourists of Capri to have respect not only for it but also for all animal species, to preserve them and allow them to live in their natural habitat.

The Capri blue lizard is also the subject of study by some degree courses and universities, committed to understanding the motivation of this particular color so bright and unique that it would be found in other animals present on the islands.

Capri Tour

We don’t guarantee you will see a blue lizard up close but with a Capri boat tour you can pass by the Faraglioni for sure. 😉

But how can you study a lizard on Capri?

The teams of scholars had to make use of some mountaineers who climbed the Faraglioni (which obviously is usually not absolutely possible).

Science or legend?

What we like about the blue lizard of Capri is that it is unique, it is that even if we know that its color is due to particular biological conformations of the lizard, we also naively like to think that its intense blue comes from the blue sea of Capri.
